چکیده

GM000887-PO-Waugh. f The intense cyclonic vortices that form over the winter pole are one of the most prominent features of the stratospheric circulation. The structure and dynamics of these “polar vortices” play a dominant role in the winter and spring stratospheric circulation and are key to determining distribution of trace gases, in particular ozone, and the couplings between the stratosphere and troposphere. In this chapter, we review the observed structure, dynamical theories, and modeling of these polar vortices. We consider both the zonal mean and three-dimensional potential vorticity perspective and examine the occurrence of extreme events and long-term trends. o Pr

A climatology of stratospheric polar vortices and anticyclones

[1] United Kingdom Meteorological Office global analyses from 1991 to 2001 are used to create a global climatology of stratospheric polar vortices and anticyclones. New methodologies are developed that identify vortices in terms of evolving three-dimensional (3-D) air masses. A case study illustrates the performance of the identification schemes during February and March of 1999 when a merger o...

Polar vortices on Earth and Mars: A comparative study of the climatology and variability from reanalyses

Polar vortices on Mars provide case-studies to aid understanding of geophysical vortex dynamics and may help to resolve long-standing issues regarding polar vortices on Earth. Due to the recent development of the first publicly available Martian reanalysis dataset (MACDA), for the first time we are able to characterise thoroughly the structure and evolution of the Martian polar vortices, and he...

Stratospheric dynamics and midlatitude jets under geoengineering with space mirrors and sulfate and titania aerosols

The impact on the dynamics of the stratosphere of three approaches to geoengineering by solar radiation management is investigated using idealized simulations of a global climate model. The approaches are geoengineering with sulfate aerosols, titania aerosols, and reduction in total solar irradiance (representing mirrors placed in space). If it were possible to use stratospheric aerosols to cou...

Stratospheric variability contributed to and sustained the recent hiatus in Eurasian winter warming

The recent hiatus in global-mean surface temperature warming was characterized by a Eurasian winter cooling trend, and the cause(s) for this cooling is unclear. Here we show that the observed hiatus in Eurasian warming was associated with a recent trend toward weakened stratospheric polar vortices. Specifically, by calculating the change in Eurasian surface air temperature associated with a giv...

Technical Note: SWIFT - A Fast Semi-Empirical Model For Polar Stratospheric Ozone Loss

An extremely fast model to estimate the degree of stratospheric ozone depletion during polar winters is described. It is based on a set of coupled differential equations that simulate the seasonal evolution of vortex-averaged hydrogen chloride (HCl), nitric acid (HNO3), chlorine ni5 trate (ClONO2), active forms of chlorine (ClOx=Cl+ClO+ 2ClOOCl) and ozone (O3) on isentropic levels within the po...
